Karen Thorsey
Owner and Founder
With a career spanning over 30 years in the visual design world and over 20 years in the floral industry, Karen is the visionary behind Foxtail Cottage Floral. and Her journey began in the vibrant cities of Boston and New York, where she honed her skills in visual design and styling before transitioning her talents to the world of florals. Karen attended Bowdoin College and The University of Virginia with a B.A. in English and Art History as well as studying design in Boston.
In 2013, Karen embarked on a new venture, founding Foxtail Cottage Floral with a clear vision: to craft elevated, timeless weddings while fostering an enriching and fulfilling work environment for all involved. Drawing upon her background in design and her innate understanding of color, Karen has curated a distinctive aesthetic for the studio—one that is timeless, refined, and utterly unique.
Over the years, Karen's unwavering dedication to excellence and her commitment to creating unforgettable experiences for her clients have continued the lasting Foxtail Cottage Floral reputation.
Martha Henderson
Lead Floral Designer & Manager
Martha is a floral designer known for her refined eye, intentional approach, and deep-rooted understanding of the natural world. With a degree in Interactive Design from James Madison University, she brings both artistic intuition and thoughtful composition to every arrangement she creates.
Her career began in Encinitas, CA and New York City, where she worked in interior plant styling and botanical care—experience that shaped her signature style of florals grounded in movement, texture, and seasonality. She later founded her own plant design company, Verde Interior Plant Design, expanding her expertise in crafting living environments that feel harmonious and expressive.
A Charlottesville native and St. Anne’s-Belfield alum, Martha’s work spans floral styling, garden maintenance, conservation volunteer coordination, and hands-on production across a variety of design settings. She blends horticultural knowledge with a designer’s eye for form, color, and storytelling, creating florals that feel elevated, natural, and deeply personal.
As Manager and Lead Designer at Foxtail Cottage Floral, Martha brings warmth, artistry, and a commitment to florals that celebrate the beauty of nature in its most thoughtful expression.
